Scripture: “By long forbearance and calmness of spirit a judge or ruler is persuaded, and soft speech breaks down the most bonelike resistance.” – Proverbs 25:15
Our nation and world is very much divided over several values, beliefs, and ideologies. It bothers me a lot, and I suspect it causes you to feel just as much sadness, disappointment, and angst. Deep in our souls we know it’s wrong. We know it isn’t God’s way.
I have been on a Dionne Warwick kick lately. Her greatest hits album has a song I had never heard before, entitled, “The Windows of the World,” by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Wikipedia writes, “Hal David wrote lyrics for “The Windows of the World” which overtly but gently lament U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war (an especial concern to David, who had two young sons, one of them almost of eligible age for the draft). The arrangement for “The Windows of the World” has a subtle Asian flavor featuring strings plucked in the style of a koto and also finger symbols the latter evoking the sound of raindrops on a window.” Take a listen: Dionne Warwick – The Windows of The World (Burt Bacharach)
“What is the whole world coming to?,” Dionne so eloquently asks, and we are asking that now.
One might think that unity is the answer, but that expectation is too high. Harmony is our higher choice. One definition you’ll find is “a consistent, orderly, or pleasing arrangement of parts; congruity.” God designed a world of diversity for all of the many good reasons I know you can name as well as I. Another definition of the word harmony is “the simultaneous combination of tones, especially when blended into chords pleasing to the ear; chordal structure, as distinguished from melody and rhythm.” A chord only exists when each part is present and heard. The combined tone produces a sound not otherwise known. Did you notice the simple chords in the song? Beautiful!
Pray for harmony, that the people of the world will appreciate and embrace one another’s differences, based on agreement of a few fundamental values. Meditate on the ways that you can promote harmony in your piece of the world.
“It is the harmony of the diverse parts, their symmetry, their happy balance; in a word it is all that introduces order, all that gives unity, that permits us to see clearly and to comprehend at once both the ensemble and the details.” – Henri Poincare
A.S.K. (the Higher Choices Process)
Ask – questions to discover the direction God would suggest you take.
1. Where are you experiencing disharmony or dissonance in your world?
2. Do you think selfishness and unrealistic expectations contribute to that?
3. Do you believe living on purpose contributes to harmony, each playing their part?
Seek – ideas on choices that will take you further along your higher path.
Knock – truth embraced through practice and persistence; abiding.
