FAITH – Born of choice and strengthened by action

SCRIPTURE:  “Then Jesus said to the centurion, ‘Go!  It will be done just as you believed it would.’  And his servant was healed at that very hour.”  –  Matthew 8:13 – NIV

I have always impressed by the story of the faithful centurion, and I admit being envious of him as well.  This story is told in both the books of Matthew and Luke.  What makes this story appealing is that this man gets it!  Rather, he gets who Jesus is, and understands that Jesus has the authority, power, and willingness to heal.

Matthew’s story begins in verse 5, as the centurion asks Jesus to heal “my servant at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering.”  When Jesus says he will go and heal the servant, the man says that he is not worth, but Jesus only need say the word and the servant will be healed.  “For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me.  I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes.  I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”  Jesus is amazed by this man’s faith, and turns to the crowd to say as much.

The scriptures say this soldier has heard about Jesus.  What he has heard, we do not know.  I suspect that he has heard that Jesus is The Messiah, and he has heard of the miracles performed.  Perhaps the centurion realizes that if Jesus is the prophesied savior, then indeed God’s word is true.  He accepts the description of God’s character and kingdom principles.  He chose to believe, and took action in line with that faith.

Faith starts with a choice.  You read God’s word and choose to believe.  Your faith strengthens and grows each time to take action in line with your belief, and experience God at work in your life.  Faith is, above all, your choice to believe in the person of Jesus Christ.

Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times.”  – Martin Luther

Ask – questions to discover the direction God would suggest you take.

1. Is it hard for you to have faith in things you cannot see or detect with your senses?
2. Do you think faith if God translate to faith in yourself?
3. What do you really need to believe will happen for you this week?
